Byron Syring DELTA Center Becomes First Trauma-Skilled™ School in Colorado
Monte Vista, CO 10/14/2024 — Byron Syring DELTA Center, part of the Monte Vista School District, has become the first school in the state of Colorado to achieve Trauma-Skilled™ Schools Certification. This certification is a significant milestone, demonstrating the school’s commitment to fostering a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
The Trauma-Skilled™ Schools Certification, developed by the National Dropout Prevention Center (NDPC), recognizes schools that have successfully implemented strategies to address the impact of trauma on student learning and behavior. The program provides a comprehensive framework for creating a trauma-sensitive school culture, which includes professional development for staff, support systems for students, and engagement with the broader school community.
“We are honored to certify the Byron Syring DELTA Center as a Trauma-Skilled™ School,” said John Gailer, Director of Professional Services at the National Dropout Prevention Center. “This accomplishment highlights the school’s dedication to understanding and mitigating the effects of trauma, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to succeed academically and personally.”
Research indicates that trauma can significantly hinder a student’s ability to learn, impacting their behavior, relationships, and overall well-being. By becoming a Trauma-Skilled™ School, the DELTA Center has demonstrated a proactive approach in addressing these challenges. The school has implemented evidence-based practices and created a supportive environment that promotes resilience and academic success.
“I am incredibly proud of the work our staff has done over the last two years to achieve this certification,” said Rebekah Johnson. “As a principal of an alternative high school, I knew WHAT trauma was and the effects trauma has on students. After completing this training, I now have the skills and knowledge of HOW I can support students and staff. Staff now have skills to meet the unique learning needs of our students, and our learning environment encourages students to feel comfortable, supported, and valued. This recognition affirms our commitment to providing a nurturing and inclusive environment where our students can thrive.”
The NDPC’s Trauma-Skilled™ Schools Model is integral to the certification process, ensuring that schools and districts achieving this status have fully implemented its comprehensive framework. This model equips educators with the tools and knowledge needed to identify and respond to the needs of students affected by trauma, creating a supportive and nurturing environment. By adhering to this model, schools not only improve academic outcomes but also enhance the overall school climate, fostering a sense of safety and community. The certification verifies that the Byron Syring DELTA Center has met these rigorous standards, demonstrating their commitment to addressing and mitigating the impacts of trauma on students.
