John Hernandez
John Hernandez is the Director of Student Services at East Central Independent School District in San Antonio, TX. A former high school football coach in three disadvantaged Texas school districts and with over 20 years in education, Hernandez frequently saw students facing poverty and trauma. Join Solutions to the Dropout Crisis in exploring the systems and processes implemented by the East Central Independent School District (ISD) in San Antonio, TX, on their road to becoming a trauma-informed district. Because many of the students in the district are beyond at risk, East Central ISD adopted a districtwide approach to meet students’ physical and emotional needs related to trauma.
This approach, led by John Hernandez, included creating EC Cares to reach students who are considered wounded or are affected by a traumatic event. EC Cares addresses important social issues that affect students’ education, health, and quality of life, and the EC Cares Team strives to positively impact its students and their families. Together, the district and EC Cares staff listen to the needs of students who have experienced or are experiencing trauma and customize their approach in meeting those at-risk students’ resource needs.
