Our Guest(s) This Week

Kitty Johnson

Kitty Johnson is currently coordinator of Connected Counseling for the Saint Paul School District. As a counselor on special assignment, she helps counselors across the district learn and implement best practices to help increase student achievement for ALL students. Before coming to this position, she was as a high school counselor for twelve years at Johnson Senior High School on the east side of St. Paul. While there, she helped develop Small Learning Communities and was chair person for the Freshman Academy. As former president of the Minnesota School Counselors Association and as a current counselor in Saint Paul, Kitty is fortunate to work in a progressive school district that is transforming school counselors and school counseling programs. The outcomes for both: help increase students' academic achievements.

This Week's Topic

Standards based high school educational reform movements led to the creation of the American School Counselors Association National Model: ‘A Framework for School Counseling Programs’. Saint Paul high school counselors across the district learned the model and created ‘Connected Counseling: A Strategic Plan to Restructure St. Paul’s High School Counseling Programs’ to raise graduation rates for all students. Connected Counseling means students have connections to caring adults, supportive peers, challenging academic curricula, community partners, and the ability to create a Six Year Plan outlining their four years of high school and two years beyond. This broadcast will introduce you to Connected Counseling.
