2018–2019 Innovation and Transformational Leadership Network

Innovation and Transformational Leadership Network

AASA is partnering with Dr. Bill Daggett and the Successful Practices Network to facilitate a year-long network of select superintendents and their leadership teams. These leaders will work throughout the year in an Innovation Network to study best practices and apply principles of innovation to their district-wide planning and work. As members of the Superintendent Innovation Network, participants will benefit from direct support of AASA, SPN and their other network members.

Blended Support Innovation Network

The work of the Innovation Network will be supported by both face-to-face and virtual resources including meetings, professional learning and collaboration opportunities. The following is a suggested model for year-long support:

  • Summer 2018
    • AASA leadership, with assistance from Bill Daggett and leadership of SPN, identifies 40 participating superintendents. Each superintendent must also identify a team of four additional system leaders to include:
      • Lead instructional administrator (CAO, Chief Learning Officer, Assistant Superintendent/Director for Curriculum and Instruction) recommended
      • Board Member recommended
      • Building Principal recommended
      • Teacher Leader recommended
  • Fall 2018
    • Bill Daggett, Ray McNulty, Mort Sherman or designees from AASA conduct a virtual launch to introduce the project and begin working on framing innovation goals
    • Bill Daggett, Ray McNulty, Mort Sherman or designees from AASA facilitate a day-long face-to-face kick-off to refine goals and begin laying out next steps
  • Fall 2018-Summer 2019: Beginning with the face-to-face kick off and continuing throughout the duration of the project, each participating district will be supported both in their home district and virtually by the following:
    • 1 day onsite with SPN Consultant to support and refine the development of innovation plans
    • Ongoing virtual support from their SPN Consultant to facilitate development and implementation of innovation plan
    • Ongoing access to SPN’s online repository of best practices, research and tools
    • Access to an online community for the Innovation Network to connect with colleagues in other participating districts
    • Regular briefing virtual meetings with Bill Daggett, Mort Sherman and other network members
  • February 2019
    • SPN and AASA will facilitate a conference within a conference for Innovation Network Superintendents and their leadership teams at AASA’s National Conference. This approach will provide opportunities for target professional learning as well as collaboration time both within district teams and across the network as a whole. Upon further discussion it will be determined if these sessions or open only to network participants or if they will be open to all conference attendees.
  • June 2019
    • SPN and AASA will facilitate a conference within a conference for Innovation Network Superintendents and their leadership teams at the annual Model Schools Conference. This approach will provide opportunities for target professional learning as well as collaboration time both within district teams and across the network as a whole.
  • Summer 2019
    • Virtual support continues as districts implement their innovation plans
  • Fall 2019
    • District leadership teams come together to present their innovation plans in short video sessions
    • Development of executive summaries of each district’s innovative initiative
    • Collaborate with other network members on the video presentations and executive summaries
    • Video sessions and executive summaries to be shared with all network members
